The Vejigante Mask was only a part of a complete very colorful outfits. The Vejigante is Demon figure from medieval Spanish folklore that has become a staple of Puertorican culture. During Carnival festivals the vejigante dress in a horned mask called careta, and flowing costume to join the crowds in singing and dancing. The careta masks are a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico. The masks are made in the cities of Ponce, Hatillo shown here and are made from Papier Mache and Loiza that are carved from coconuts for use in carnival celebrations. Also note that the masks are used as home decoration for its beauty and colors by many. locals and tourists.
